The babies are two days old today!  Luke Edward (4lbs, 2oz) was born at 11:51am and Amelia Jane (3lbs, 9oz) came at 11:53 am ... It's a pretty amazing thing to hear your babies cry for the first time.  And we were so thankful that they came out screaming!  The c-section went really well and Scott followed the babes right into the NICU while I went to recovery.  They are having the issues of prematurity that we expected for 32-weekers.  Both babies are on CPAP (support for their lungs) and will probably need that for a week, maybe two.  Luke and Amelia both have high bilirubin levels (which leads to jaundice) so they're under special lights to help lowers their levels.  Our little glow worms!  They both have feeding tubes and are tolerating small amounts of breast milk every 3 hours.  Both babies are having brief episodes of apnea, meaning that they forget to breathe, which is common for preemies because their brains aren't mature yet.  The apnea episodes usually resolve around 34-35 weeks.  As much as we knew these would be the issues they'd have it's hard to watch your babies hooked up to so many machines.  But we're thankful that they're in a great hospital getting really good care.  The highlight of every day is at 8pm when we get to hold the babes ... that makes everything worth it ...  The best medicine there is!  The plan is for me to be discharged on Tuesday.  It's ironic that after 8 weeks of wanting to go home, now I want to stay!  I can't imagine driving away from the hospital without our babies.  But it'll be a blessing in some ways to have a bit of time at home to start the long recovery from bed rest and the c-section.  Thank you all so much for your prayers Friday ... these babies are such a blessing to us.  We can't wait to introduce them to our family and friends!

  1. Katie! I love the pictures (and you added that sweet name picture since I last looked, so cute!). I hope, like you said, you can really recover in these next weeks with your time at home, and in the meantime you can also prepare your home for them to come home to, which I imagine you missed out on a bit being in the hospital!!! Do you need anything? Can the babies wear clothes yet? Is Emme the nickname for Amelia? :) So sweet :) We love you guys and SO wish we were there to stop by...when you're feeling more up to it, but I suppose you'll be quite up to it by the time we reach June! :) Looking forward to seeing you all!

  2. Beautiful. Nicely done Mama and Daddy. I bet it feels amazing to see what you're worked so hard for in more ways than one. Love the nickname Emme, though I also adore Amelia. And I really like the combo; Luke and Amelia.

As hard as it will be to be away from the hospital, try to enjoy the fact that you'll be well rested (you deserve it after 11 weeks of craziness) and ready to fully take over when you can "drive away from the hospital with the babies."

    Congratulations. :)

  3. @T: So glad you guys will be here in June and can meet the little ones. Thanks so much for your prayers. Emme is one of the nicknames (according to the baby name book) for Amelia and we thought it was darling! No, no clothes yet but hopefully in a few weeks. Love you!
@Greta -- Thanks so much for your notes and comments throughout this hospital stay. We love coming to Bend ... probably won't make it there until the summer again but I'll let you know when we do ... it would be so fun to see you!
